Has fixed stuttering while watching Freeview HD 1080i programs, 27 Jun 2012

I bought a Freeview HD card about 6 weeks ago. Standard Definition programs were excellent but HD programs could jump and stutter, especially during long panning shots or (damn it) while watching football.

I did a *lot* of research into the possible causes and narrowed it down as follows:
* Faulty aerial connection - took apart the connectors and rebuilt - problem still there
* Signal too strong - borrowed an attenuator off a friend - no change, except that with some tweaking I lost signal completely.
* Signal too weak - I bought a signal amplifier and rigged it up - the picture quality improved, but the glitches were still there.

The next item to look at was the video card in my computer. It's a Radeon 4200 that is integrated into the motherboard. Initially I discounted this as the possible cause as it plays back BluRay content perfectly. However, deeper research led me to believe I could have tracked down the source of the glitching.

You see, BluRay is in 1080p (1920 x 1080 progressive scan) format whereas Freeview HD is generally in 1080i (1920 x 1080 interlaced scan) format. This interlacing needs to be deinterlaced by the graphics card and, it seems, the Radeon 4200 card didn't have the horsepower to deinterlace without glitching.

So I did some more research and came to the conclusion that a Radeon 6450 card should have sufficient processing power to deinterlace the Freeview HD signals.

When I first installed the card I was dismayed to see the glitching was still there. However, I reasoned that the drivers for the old Radeon 4200 card might be conflicting with the new drivers, so I uninstalled all of the AMD Catalyst software and drivers, rebooted, and installed the latest compatible drivers for the Radeon 6450.

This time it worked - with the standard 'auto everything' settings the Freeview HD programs are playing back smoothly and glitch free.

If you're experiencing similar problems with your Freeview HD playback and you have an older video card this could be the most cost effective solution to getting things working.

I hope you have found this review useful.

This was a replacement for my AMD Radeon HD 5450.
It is completely silent and works really well on all programmes and conversions.
In gaming you will need to stay in mid-range settings or things will get 'choppy'.
For its price it really is remarkable.

Beyond my expectations, 12 Dec 2012

I'm pretty amazed at the performance of this low budget card.
I run a laptop with a fairly good onboard Radeom graphics card. But quite often when trying to run more advanced games and programmes, such as Space Engine, Lunar Flight, Railworks Train Simulator 2012, Boxplorer (a 3d fractal explorer )and flightsim games such as Hawx, I'd get an error message saying my card isnt up to spec as it doesent have Open-Gl-3 or above.
So I thought I'd buy this card and see how it ran on my HP Pavilion Slimline -which runs windows 7 but isnt realy a fast PC. Well blow me down, this Asus card transiformed the PC into a fairly beefy games PC and has allowed me to catch up on those games and programmes that I'd previously missed out on.

This card is of course silent, plus its Direct-X-11, AND it only takes a maximum of 28 watts from the power supply, which means even on intense graphic games like Hawx flightsim, despite the card's heatsink getting very hot, there is no graphic corruption and the game runs on maximum detail settings in DX-11 mode despite the PC only having a tiny low profile 280w power supply!

So all in all I'm very happy with this card, and as a bonus it comes with low profile brackets which allows it to be used on slimline PCs too.

Amazing what spec you can get nowadays for less than thirty quid, this would have cost hundreds a few years ago!

Unless you are intending to play intense graphic games then this will handle everything you throw at it.

Very pleased.

moving up to this is amazing i can run arma 2 on medium setting with shadow full. i can run any source game full graphics with no problems. struggles with flight sim x but on low settings works fine. i have a good selection of games to get a good cross-reference on how well it works far cry 2 on ultra . crisis 2 on low with shadows off.

Arrived in good time and was well packed. Raised the playing graphics of my basic PC from 2.3 to 4.6 according to Windows experience test. The picture quality on my games has improved noticeably.
